Alexis Valenzuela was named assistant coach of the women's tennis program in the fall of 2021.
Under Valenzuela's first year as an assistant coach, the Titans women's tennis program embarked on their seventh straight winning season. The Titans went 16-8 overall for the season and 5-5 in Big West conference play. As the No. 5 seed in the Big West Tournament, the Titans defeated the No. 4 seeded UC Davis Aggies in the quarterfinals before falling to the No. 1 seeded UCSB Gauchos in the semifinals.
The Titans went on an 8-game win streak including a perfect 7-0 homestand for the month of March where they defeated three ranked opponents. They took down the No. 37 ranked Utah Utes for one of the biggest wins in program history. The Titans also became ranked for the first time in program history during the season and achieved their highest ranking of No. 60 after the win over Utah. They finished the season ranked as the No. 74 ranked team in the country.
The Titans had four players receive All-Big West accolades. YuSeung Suh was selected to the Big West First Team. The doubles pairing of Eira Tobrand and Camila Garcia were given First Team honors in doubles. And the doubles pairing of Suh and Natalie Duffy were given honorable mention honors.
It is her second stint as a coach with the program as she was a volunteer assistant coach for two years beginning in the fall of 2017.
During her first year as a volunteer coach, Alexis participated in the record-breaking year of her former teammates. The Titans went 20-6 (.769) breaking last year’s program record for the number of wins. They earned No.3 seed after the regular season and played the program first-ever Big West Championship game but came short against the University of Hawaii for the conference title.
The 2018-19 campaign saw the Titans go 15-6 overall and 6-2 in Big West Play. The team advanced to the Big West Tournament semifinals but fell short against Long Beach State.
Valenzuela, a Titan alumna, graduated in 2017 as one of the best players in program history. She was a First-Team All-Big West singles honoree all four years of her career, the only Titan to ever accomplish that feat and one of just nine people in Big West history. She was a five-time Big West Athlete of the Week honoree over the course of her career.
Her final season in 2016-2017 was a record-breaking year. Valenzuela went 17-4 overall in singles play, her 17 dual singles wins are the most for the program since prior to 2001. Her six Big West singles victories are the most for the program since prior to 2001 as well. She went 21-5 in doubles play with partner Camille De Leon. Valenzuela earned Big West Athlete of the Week twice during her senior campaign, Feb. 1 and Mar. 8. Valenzuela boasts a 55-15 record in dual singles matches, including a 17-10 mark in the Big West Conference and a 51-13 career record when playing at the top of the order.
