FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team completed the sweep over Long Beach State in a 6-3 win and a 8-7 comeback victory, solidifying the No. 1 seed in the 2026 Big West Softball Championship. The Titans improved to 35-12 overall and 22-2 in Big West play.Â
Cal State Fullerton 6, Long Beach State 5Â
Long Beach State beat the Titans to the board in the second inning, capitalizing on a throwing error by
Eva Hurtado in the circle. Trailing 1-0, the Titans put runners on the corners after
Ava Arce walked and
Lulu Sanchez hit a single off the wall in right field. Arce then advanced home on a double steal attempt to tie the game at 1-1.Â
The Titans took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second when
Maggie Paulovich and
Kate Verhoef scored on a single to left field by
Sarah Perez.Â
Fullerton pressured the Beach into making a call to the bullpen in the fourth inning. A groundout to second base by Verhoef moved runners into scoring position before
Jenica Silvas reached on an error, scoring Sanchez. Perez (3-for-4. 4 RBI, SB) followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 6-1.Â
Long Beach State cut Fullerton's lead to 6-3 in the sixth on an RBI single through the left side and a two-run double to right field. The Beach attempted to plate two runs on the play, but Paulovich connected with McClinton and
Alexia Lopez to record the third out.Â
The Beach brought the game within one run, 6-5, in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run to left field, ending Hurtado's outing in the circle. Over 6.2 innings, she allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits and four balls. She struck out four batters.
Trisha McCleskey entered in relief and earned her second save of the season after retiring hte final batter on three straight strikes to secure the series win, 6-5.Â
Cal State Fullerton 8, Long Beach State 7
Long Beach State opened the game with a 5-0 lead, forcing an early call to the bullpen for the Titans.
Leanna Garcia, who started the game in the circle, allowed three runs on three hits and a walk before McCleskey made her second appearance of the day with one out.Â
The Beach extended its lead to 7-0 in the second inning on a two-run home run, but the Titans answered in the bottom half. Fullerton found its first run on an RBI single to center by Paulovich, and
Colby McClinton cranked a three-run home run over the wall in left-center, tightening the deficit to 7-5.Â
The Titans tied the game in the fourth inning when Perez singled to third base and advanced to third on a throwing error. Verhoef and Paulovich scored on the play to even the game at 7-7. McClinton then drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Titans and Beach remained scoreless through the final three innings.Â
McCleskey improved to 16-8 after pitching 6.2 innings. She allowed three runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout.Â
The Titans close the regular season at UC Santa Barbara on May 1-2. The series opens on Friday with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. before concluding on Saturday with a single game at 1:00 p.m.Â
