Titans Drop Series Finale at UC Davis in Walk-Off Loss

Alexia Lopez, Sarah Coccillos hit two sets of back-to-back extra-base hits before Aggies rally in seventh

DAVIS, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team fell 6-5 in its series finale against UC Davis on Sunday at La Rue Field. The walk-off loss snapped a seven-game win streak. The Titans moved to 21-11 overall and sit 10-2 in Big West play.

In the first three innings, the Titans left five runners on base and turned three double plays. In the bottom half of the inning, UC Davis started the scoring with a double and an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

Alexia Lopez (2-for-2, 2B, HR, R, 3 RBI) tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning with a two-out double to right-center field. Kate Verhoef, who reached on an infield single to the shortstop, scored from first base on the play. Another double by Sarah Coccillos (2-for-4, 2B, HR, R, 2 RBI) scored pinch runner Briona Ferdman from second base for a 2-1 lead.

A fielding error by Sarah Perez at shortstop in the sixth inning led to the Aggies tying the game at 2-2 on a double over the head of Verhoef in center field. Nataly Lozano showcased her range in the outfield, recording the third out on a running grab in right-center, to keep the Aggies from taking another lead.

Lopez and Coccillos hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh to retake a 5-2 lead over the Aggies. Lopez gave the Titans a 4-2 advantage on a two-out, two-run home run to deep left field, before Coccillos turned on an 0-1 count and sent a ball over the left field wall.

Trisha McCleskey tossed six innings before walking the leadoff batter and getting pulled in the bottom of the seventh. She allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks.

Eva Hurtado entered in relief, inheriting one runner, with an opportunity to earn her second save of the year. A walk and two extra base hits by the Aggies tied the game at 5-5 prior to the Aggies hitting a walk-off sacrifice fly to center field. With the loss, Hurtado picked up her fourth loss of the season.

The Titans remain on the road next week at CSUN. The series opens with a doubleheader on Friday, April 3, at 1 p.m. The Titans and Matadors will conclude the weekend on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m.
