FULLERTON, Calif. – For NCAA Civic Engagement Day on Tuesday, Nov. 4, the Cal State Fullerton Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) organized a campus-wide helmet drive and decorating initiative to promote micromobility safety and injury prevention.

SAAC partnered with Emelie Peraza from TitanMed and Andrea Aguilera from Parking and Transportation to educate student-athletes on safe riding practices, campus regulations, rules of the road and the importance of wearing proper safety equipment when using micromobility devices, including electric scooters and bicycles.

Student-athletes then took that knowledge directly to the campus community through volunteer shifts, engaging with riders, sharing safety information and distributing donated helmets.

To encourage helmet use, participants had the opportunity to personalize their helmets with Cal State Fullerton and reflective stickers. Additional safety items, including bandanas, lights and bike bells, were also distributed.

The initiative carried special significance for the Titan community following the tragic loss of beloved women's soccer student-athlete Lauren Turner last year and the ongoing recovery of Ashlyn Gwynn from a traumatic brain injury. Through this effort, student-athletes sought to honor their teammates while using Civic Engagement Day as an opportunity to raise awareness, promote education and encourage one another to make safe choices.

The event ran from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with 223 student-athletes participating and 45 helmets distributed to members of the campus community.
