FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team's run at the Big West Championship came to a end Thursday night as the No. 1 seed Titans fell 6-2 to No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara at Anderson Family Field.
The Titans (37-17, 22-5)Â took an early 2-0 lead behind an Ava Arce solo home run and an RBI triple from Kristalyn Romulo in the second inning, but Fullerton's offense stalled the rest of the way as UCSB (30-24) surged back with six unanswered runs over the fifth and sixth innings.Â
Arce (1-for-3, RBI, R) sent a ball over the left field wall for her 12th home run of the season. This marked her 15th career home run and 100th career run batted in. The Big West Field Player of the Year finishes the season slashing .409/.435/.701, ranking in the top 25 nationally with 62 RBI.Â
Â
Alexia Lopez (1-for-2, R) was batted around the diamond to third base on a sacrifice bunt and fly ball before
Kristalyn Romulo traded places with a triple to left field for a 2-0 lead after two innings.Â
Â
The Gauchos found a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning to overtake the Titans 3-2 on four hits before another three-run inning in the sixth extended their lead over the Titans to 6-2.Â
Trisha McCleskey and
Eva Hurtado made their second appearances in the circle for the Titans. Through six innings, McCleskey threw 117 pitches, allowing six runs off 10 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Hurtado (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) collected the last two outs for the Titans in the top of the seventh inning.Â
As a team, the Titans ranked 15th nationally with a .342 batting average entering the weekend. This was the team's best average in program history, beating the 2021 Titans who batted .328 on the season.Â
