Softball Falls to No. 6 UCLA, 4-2

Defensive errors allowed the Bruins to overtake the Titans early

LOS ANGELES – The Cal State Fullerton softball team fell to No. 6 UCLA, 4-2, at Easton Stadium on Wednesday night. The Titans finished 13-3 when on the road and 34-15 overall.

The Titans beat the Bruins to the board in the second inning on a throwing error from left field after retiring Abigail Salazar on a fly ball in foul territory. Ava Arce (single) scored on the play, collecting her 27th run scored of the season.

UCLA responded in the bottom half of the second frame with two runs for a 2-1 lead over the Titans. The Bruins capitalized on three hits and a throwing error by Lopez behind the plate.

Trisha McCleskey entered in relief of Eva Hurtado (3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) in the fourth inning after the Bruins arrived at second base on a base hit and fielding error by the outfield. McCleskey quickly found two outs on a sacrifice bunt and fly ball before another fielding error allowed the Bruins to extend their lead over the Titans to 3-1.

The 2024 Gold Glove recipient Kate Verhoef prevented the Bruins from tacking on a fourth run in the sixth inning, gunning down the runner advancing home on a base hit into center field. The Bruins found an insurance run a batter later on a base hit to left field for a 4-1 lead.

A double off the wall in right-center field allowed Maggie Paulovich to cruise into second base in the top of the seventh inning. Sophia Guevara advanced Paulovich to third on a ground ball hit back to the circle, while KK Christie scored Paulovich on a hit just out of reach of the pitcher's glove.

Down two runs (4-2) with a runner at first base, freshman Jenna Stevens dug into the box for the Titans. Stevens drew a walk after fouling off three straight pitches, passing the bat to Nataly Lozano, who was rung up on strikes to end the game.

The Titans and Bruins met for the 94th time in series history Wednesday night, snapping a 14-game win streak for the Titans and issuing the Bruins their 11th straight victory over the Titans. The two squads met earlier this season in Fullerton at the Judi Garman Classic, resulting in a 2-6 loss for the Titans.

The Titans close out the 2025 regular season this weekend at Anderson Family Field against Cal State Bakersfield. The series opens on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. Senior Day will be celebrated following the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
