FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team defeated CSUN in a 2-0 shutout in Friday night's series opener at Anderson Family Field. The Titans earned their 25th win of the season, improving to 25-14 overall and 11-5 in Big West play.
The Titans and Matadors kicked the series off with a pitching duel, retiring the first 12 batters in order through the first two innings.
Ava Arce (1-for-3, R, HR, 2 RBI) broke the silence in the bottom of the fourth inning, hitting a two-run home run over the wall in right-center field for a 2-0 lead. Arce (.402/.424/.684) is leading the team in batting, slugging, hits (47), doubles (9), home runs (8) and RBI (44).
Trisha McCleskey (3.48 ERA) silenced the Matadors, allowing no runs off three hits and a walk. McCleskey set a new career-best in strikeouts with seven punch outs. With the win, McCleskey improved to 11-7 overall, with seven complete games. She has held conference opponents to a .223 batting average.
The Titans and Matadors return to Anderson Family Field on Saturday to close out the series with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
