LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team opened Big West play with a sweep over UC San Diego, after defeating the Tritons in a 4-2 victory and an 8-0 run-rule on Saturday at Triton Softball Stadium. The Titans surpassed 15 wins, standing 16-9 on the season and 3-0 in Big West play.
Over the weekend, the Titans scored 18 runs on 34 hits. In the circle,

Trisha McCleskey and
Eva Hurtado held the Tritons to 14 hits and four earned runs, while recording 18 strikeouts.

The Titans jumped to an early 1-0 lead over the Tritons on an infield single by
Alexia Lopez that scored
Nataly Lozano. Lozano (2-for-4, R) joined
Sarah Perez and
Ava Arce on the bases with a single up the middle earlier that inning.
Briona Ferdman extended Fullerton's lead to 2-0 in the second inning, driving in
Colby McClinton on a ground ball. McClinton (3-for-4, RBI, 2 R) led off the inning with a bunt before advancing to second base on an error by the second baseman.
McClinton reached home safely in the fourth inning as
Kristalyn Romulo singled to third base. UC San Diego responded in the bottom of the inning with a run scored on a sacrifice bunt, to cut Fullerton's lead to 4-1.
The TItans found their fourth run of the day in the seventh inning on a single by McClinton that drove in
Abigail Salazar, who pinch ran for Lopez (single). The Tritons capitalized on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning, cutting Fullerton's lead to 4-2, before McClinton fielded a ground ball to secure the series win over the Tritons.
McCleskey held the Tritons to six hits through seven innings of work, collecting her sixth win and fourth complete game of the season. McCleskey struck out two batters on her way to victory.

The Titans and Tritons remained scoreless through four frames, before the Titans rallied six hits for an explosive fifth inning.
Sophia Guevara opened the inning with a four-pitch walk before Perez, Lozano (bunt) and Arce moved runners on base knocks.
Perez started the scoring on her infield single to shortstop, taking a 1-0 lead over the Tritons. A walk issued to Lopez drove in Fullerton's third run of the game before
Sarah Coccillos (single), McClinton (single),
Sophia Guevara (single, bunt) and Romulo (ground out) scored four runners for an 8-0 lead.
Hurtado caught UC San Diego's lead off hitter on strikes to open the bottom of the fifth inning before two ground balls retired the batters in order. Hurtado's first win of the season came in a five-inning shutout win to complete the conference-opening series sweep. Hurtado held the Tritons to three hits, no runs, two walks and four strikeouts, improving to a 3.23 ERA.
The Titans return to Anderson Family Field to host UC Santa Barbara in their Big West home opener on Saturday, March 15. The Titans and Gauchos are scheduled to play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. before closing the series on Sunday, March 16 at 11:00 a.m.
