Titans Upset No. 20 San Diego State on Final Day of Judi Garman Classic

Alexia Lopez (1-for-3, 2B) and Colby McClinton (1-for-2, 2 RBI) power Titans to 7-4 victory

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team defeated the No. 20 San Diego State Aztecs for the second time this season in a 7-4 victory on Sunday. The Titans improved to 13-9 on the season, collecting two upset wins at the Judi Garman Classic. 

The Titans beat the Aztecs to the board, plating Nataly Lozano in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Colby McClinton. McClinton drove in her 11th run of the season, best for third on the team. San Diego State found two runs in the third inning on back-to-back home runs to take a 2-1 lead over the Titans. 

Ava Arce turned on the first pitch, hitting her second home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Arce has put 12 balls into play when turning on the first pitch, recording eight hits and a .727 batting average. 



The Titans retook a 3-2 lead over the nationally ranked Aztecs on a single through the left side by Sophia Guevara. 



San Diego State opened the fifth inning with a two-run single to take a 4-3 lead over the Titans before Arce (single), Alexia Lopez (double) and McClinton (single) combined for three runs in the bottom of the inning to defeat the Aztecs, 7-4. 

Trisha McCleskey saw 4.1 innings against the Aztecs, allowing four runs on seven hits with one strikeout, her 30th of the season. Leanna Garcia improved to 8-4 on the season after pitching 2.2 innings in relief for the Titans. Garcia kept the Aztecs to no runs on three hits, while punching out three batters on strikes. 

The Titans kick off Big West play at UC San Diego on Friday with a single-game matchup scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The Titans and Tritons play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. The Big West opponents last met on April 12-13, resulting in three-straight victories for the Titans.
