Softball Defeats Utah in Walk-Off at Mary Nutter Classic

Leanna Garcia holds Utah to two hits in relief appearance, Sarah Coccillos bats in winning run

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team defeated Utah in walk-off fashion (7-6) on their final day at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Titans improve to 11-5 on the season and 3-2 on the weekend.

Utah plated three runs in the first inning with one out on the board, forcing the Titans to make an early call to the bullpen with runners on first and third. Eva Hurtado entered in relief of Trisha McCleskey, loading the bases on a hit by pitch. A base on balls extended Utah's lead to 4-0.

Kristalyn Romulo (single) and Sarah Perez (bunt) flexed their speed, beating out an infield single and bunt before both stealing second. With runners in scoring position and two outs on the board, Alexia Lopez sent a blooper into shallow right field for a two-run single.

Down 4-2 in the second inning, the Titans strung together three hits to tie the game at 4-4. Sarah Perez drove in Lulu Sanchez (single) on a base hit to third base before the tying run scored on a wild pitch.

Colby McClinton drove a ball up the middle in the third inning to bring in Lopez for Fullerton's first lead of the day (5-4).

Utah responded in the top of the fourth, plating two runners for a 6-5 lead before Leanna Garcia rang Utah up on strikes with bases loaded. Garcia held Utah to two hits for the remainder of the game, striking out four batters.

A throwing error by Utah's center fielder allowed Fullerton to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning. Ava Arce led off the bottom of the seventh with a stand-up double as Lopez moved the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt. Sarah Coccillos drove in the winning run on a bunt that allowed Kate Verhoef to score from third base.

The Titans return home to host the 19th Judi Garman Classic on Thursday, Feb. 27 - Sunday, March 2. Fullerton is slated to play six games in four days. On Thursday, they are scheduled to play LSU at 5:00 p.m. and Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m.
