Softball Run-Rules Ohio, Falls to Arizona at Bear Down Fiesta

Sarah Coccillos and Nataly Lozano homer in 17-1 victory

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team split their final day at the Arizona Bear Down Fiesta, defeating Ohio in a five-inning 17-1 victory and falling to No. 15 Arizona, 5-1. The Titans stand 7-3 on the season after going 3-2 over the weekend.

As a team, the Titans posted 24 runs on 38 hits with six doubles, one triple and two home runs. Ava Arce (6 H, 2 R, 2B, 4 RBI) and Alexia Lopez (5 H, 4 R, 2B, 5 RBI) posted a .500 batting average, while Nataly Lozano (5 H, 3 R, 2B, HR, 6 RBI) batted .385.

Cal State Fullerton 17, Ohio 1 (5 innings)

Kristalyn Romulo (1-for-3, R, RBI, SB) led off the game with a single to Ohio's shortstop, taking second base on a throwing error. Arce started a rally, recording her 14th RBI of the season on a base hit up the middle that scored Romulo and Colby McClinton (hit by pitch).

Lozano (single), Lopez (single), Sarah Coccillos (double) and Sophia Guevara (single) combined for five straight Titan hits that drove in four more runs for an early 6-0 lead in the first inning.

With two outs on the board, Romulo dug into the batter's box for a second time, reaching on the shortstop's second error of the day to score Guevara for a 7-0 lead.

The Titans plated four more runs in the second inning for a 11-0 lead, highlighted by a two-run home run by Sarah Coccillos. Coccillos (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) launched the ball just over 220 ft, hitting the batter's eye in center field, for her first collegiate home run. Alexia Lopez (2-for-2, 2 R, 3 RBI) previously drove in two runs on a base hit to right field.

The Ohio Bobcats survived a shutout loss, capitalizing on a walk issued by Leanna Garcia with bases loaded in the third inning. Garcia (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) and Eva Hurtado (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K) pitched the Titans to their fifth run-rule victory, while keeping an opponent to a single run for the fourth time this season.

Fullerton found a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits and two Ohio errors. Maggie Paulovich started the rally with a single up the middle, while Kate Verhoef found herself at second base following a base hit and fielding error. KK Christie kept pace with the small ball mentality, driving in two runs on a single to left field. Jenna Stevens picked up an RBI herself on a right field knock.

Leading 14-1, Lozano (3-for-4, 3 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) smashed a ball over the left field wall, adding three more RBI to her stat line. Lozano leads the team in slugging (.889) with two home runs, both of which were three-run shots.

Fullerton's 17 runs were just three shy of breaking the program record for most runs scored in a game (20), which was set by Judi Garman's 1987 Titans against San Diego State.

No. 15 Arizona 5, Cal State Fullerton 1

The Wildcats plated a runner in the first frame before taking a 4-0 lead over the Titans on a three-run long ball to right field.

Lulu Sanchez put the Titans on the board in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly that took Arizona's left fielder all the way to the wall. Lopez (single) scored on the play, closing the deficit to three runs (4-1).

Arizona responded in the bottom half of the inning with a ground ball through the left side, extending their lead over the Titans to 5-1.

Hurtado pitched in relief of Trisha McCleskey (4.1 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), keeping the Wildcats to their five runs off nine hits.

The Titans return to Anderson Family Field for a midweek game against the University of San Diego on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m., before playing five games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
