Titans Take Series at CSUN After 12-Inning Battle

Chambers pitches 10 innings in relief without a run, Arce breaks tie for the 10th conference win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans softball team took the series against Cal State Northridge after a 12-inning, 2-1 victory on Sunday. The Titans secured their 10th conference win (10-2) and improved to 24-13 overall. They are the first to 10 wins in the Big West and have yet to lose a conference series this season.

CSUN took an early 1-0 lead over the Titans after stringing together a pair of base hits and a double off starting pitcher Haley Rainey (2.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER).

Hannah Becerra (double) was helped around the bases by an Ava Arce sacrifice bunt and a bunt by Peyton Toto to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning.

The Titans and Matadors entered a pitcher's duel shared by Fullerton's Staci Chambers and CSUN's Isabella Alonso and Lauryn Carranco. The score remained tied at 1-1 through the 11th inning.

Bailey Wallace (2-for-4) found the gap in the top of the eighth inning for a stand-up double to right-center field with one out on the board. Hannah Becerra reached on a four-pitch walk to pass the RBI opportunity off to Arce, but it would not be enough as Arce grounded a ball to first base for the third out.

Chambers (10.0 IP, 4 H, 7 K) kept the Matadors hitless from the fourth inning until CSUN got their first hit in the bottom of the 10th inning. The winning run tried to score from second but was thrown out at home on a throw-in from Mia Weckel in right field.

Arce, Toto and Sarah Perez rallied three base hits to load the bases at the top of the 11th but were not backed by enough offense to drive any runs home.

Arce (2-for-5, RBI) then became the hero in the top of the 12th inning with a base hit to center field to score Wallace (double) for a 2-1 lead over the Matadors.

The Titans will travel to No. 12 UCLA for a midweek matchup on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. This game was initially postponed due to inclement weather during the season's opening week (Feb. 8). Titans Softball will return home this weekend to resume conference play against UC San Diego on Friday (6:00 p.m.) and Saturday (doubleheader).
