FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton came out with all of the energy, dominating most of the opening set, but in the end No. 15 Cal Poly showed why its regarded as one of the best teams in the country, as the Mustangs defeated the Titans 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-11), Friday evening inside Titan Gym.
Fullerton (6-8, 0-2 Big West) dropped its eighth straight match after winning six consecutive contests, while it fell in its conference opener.
Tyler Fezzey was fantastic early, as she led the Titans in scoring, tallying 9.5 points. She led Fullerton in kills with nine on a strong .348 attack percentage to go along with a couple of digs. Madeline Schneider and Felicia Marshall each came through with six kills themselves, while Savahna Costello led the Titans with nine digs. Marshall also tallied three block assists.
Cal State Fullerton's effort was absolutely phenomenal to begin the match. It scored the first point of the match and led for most of the way, at one point building its advantage as high as 18-14 over the 15th ranked team in the country.
Unfortunately, Cal Poly grinded out a 25-19 opening set victory, rattling of eight consecutive points to claim the win after trailing 19-17.
The Mustangs took charge the rest of the way en route to the victory.
The Titans will take on UC Santa Barbara, tomorrow at 5 pm PT inside Titan Gym.
