FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton is hitting the road for the first time this season as they will head to the University of Arizona for the Hillenbrand Invitational. The Titans will play five games from Friday to Sunday.
This tournament marks the opening event for Arizona's brand-new softball stadium.
Fullerton starts the tournament with the first game of the day on Friday as they take on Illinois-Chicago at 9:00 a.m. local time. The Flames are coming off a 2-3 performance during their opening weekend suffering a pair of losses to Tennessee and a loss to Coastal Carolina while their victories came against Boston U and Rider. Fullerton leads the all-time series against UIC 2-0 with the last matchup coming back in 2007.
The Titans' second game of the tournament will close out day one as they take on New Mexico at 8:15 p.m. on Friday. The Lobos are off to a 2-1 start to 2019 picking up wins over UTEP and Creighton over the first weekend and falling to New Mexico State. CSF leads the all-time series 18-4 with the last matchup coming in 2016.
Fullerton is back at it on Saturday with a double-header starting with South Florida at 11:15 a.m. The Bulls have the worst of the teams in the Hillenbrand Invitational going 1-4 on opening weekend. However, they had a tough schedule facing Arizona, Michigan, Florida, and NC State while picking up a win against Illinois State. CSF and USF have only played each other once in program history with the win going to Fullerton. That game was played back in 1986.
Game two of Saturday's double-header will be against #7/8 Alabama, who sports a perfect 5-0 record on the year. The Crimson Tide beat Murray State twice, Troy twice, and Maryland in the Trojan Classic. The Titans trail the all-time series 1-2 with Alabama winning the last matchup in 2016.
The Titans close out the Hillenbrand Invitational with host #9/9 Arizona on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (12:30 PT). The Wildcats are off to a 3-2 start after beating Michigan, South Florida and Illinois State last weekend while falling to Florida and NC State. This will be the first matchup between the programs since a 15-0 Arizona win back in 2014. The Titans lead the all-time series by a game though at 28-27.
Every game will be broadcasted on Flo Softball with the matchup against Arizona being aired live on the PAC-12 networks. Live stats are available on arizonawildcats.com.
