SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (31-22, 16-2 BWC) couldn't get the bats going and ultimately fell to Cal Poly (24-23, 8-10 BWC) in the series finale on Sunday.
Sophie Frost got the start for the Titans and went on to throw her 16th complete game of the year, but unfortunately didn't get any offensive help to get the victory. In her six innings of work, she allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out three.
Sammie Vandiver led the offense getting two of the team's five hits as she recorded a 2-4 performance at the plate. Zoe Richard extended her hitting streak to 11 straight games going 1-3 at the plate. Bryanna Ybarra also recorded a 1-3 day at the dish while Julia Valenzuela had the final hit for Fullerton going 1-2.
For the first time this weekend, Cal Poly got on the scoreboard first. After a leadoff double by Chelsea Convissar, a throwing error from Ybarra would allow her to come in to score in the bottom half of the first inning.
After both teams were held in check in the second, the Mustangs came back and struck for two more runs in the third stringing together four hits and a hit batter to increase their lead to three runs.
That would be the only scoring as Fullerton struggled to get anything going against Cal Poly's Lindsey Chalmers, who went on to throw a complete game shutout.
The Titans will look forward to next weekend as they'll play their final conference series at home against UC Riverside.
