Fullerton, Calif. - Senior Jose Barragan scored a pair of first-half goals and Cal State Fullerton made them stand up Wednesday night for a 2-1 Big West Conference men's soccer victory over visiting Cal Poly SLO.
The win snapped a 4-game Titans' losing streak and left their record at 3-9-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the Big West. Cal Poly fell to 4-10-0 and 0-5-0.
Barragan put the Titans ahead in the 15th minute when he was the first player to get to a rebound of an Aaron Craggs shot off Cal Poly goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe. Barragan made it 2-0 in the 21st minute thanks to a terrific individual effort by junior Eugene Brooks. Brooks intercepted a Cal Poly corner kick, dribbled the ball across midfield and then outran two defenders to the left flank from where he sent a cross to an unmarked Barragan, who easily beat Coupe to the right post.
Cal Poly drew within a goal in the 69th minute when Marcus Griffin used his head to redirect a short cross past goalkeeper Bobby Armstrong.
The Mustangs' best chance to tie came with about 4 minutes remaining when a wide open Andrew Roth sent a 20-yard shot wide right.
Cal Poly outshot the Titans, 16-8, with Armstrong making 4 saves to a pair for Coupe.
Fullerton plays a nonconference match Saturday night at home vs. UC Davis while Cal Poly visits UC Santa Barbara.
