RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the first time in five season the Titans will not be in the Big West Conference Tournament finals after falling to UC Riverside 3-2 in overtime Saturday night at UCR Soccer Stadium.
Fullerton played strong throughout the match in which was a back-and-forth contest. UC Riverside got on the board first just before overtime in the 45th minute on goal by Daniel Aguirre.
The Titans went into the locker room down 1-0 but come out in the second half ready to get back in the match as they scored just one minute in on a goal by Ross McPhie to tie the game up at 1-1. Robert Coronado and Carlos Escobedo picked up the assists on the play giving Coronado 18 for his career to leave him tied for 6th all-time in the history of the program.
In the 66th minute Fullerton took the lead on an own goal. The Titans earned a corner kick which Coronado placed perfectly into the box that went off a UC Riverside player to give Fullerton the 2-1 lead.
With time winding down it appeared as though CSF was going to hold onto its one goal lead, however, Riverside was given a penalty kick in the 81st minute that Dusan Keca scored to tie the game at 2-2.
For the 11th time this season the Titans went into overtime, this time ending unfavorably. Daniel Castaneda of UC Riverside picked up a loose ball inside the box and scored in the 108th minute to give the Highlanders the win.
The Titans now look to regroup and refocus to come back next year to make it back to the Big West finals where they have been in four out of the five seasons under Head Coach George Kuntz.
