IRVINE, Calif. – For the ninth time this season the Titans needed overtime to decide the game, this falling 2-1 to UC Irvine on a goal early in the second overtime Wednesday night at Anteater Stadium.
Fullerton (6-4-6) gave up a goal if the first minute of action after being called for a penalty inside the box. Ivan Canales scored on the penalty kick to give UC Irvine (10-4-2) the early 1-0 lead. It is the first goal Paul-Andre Guerin has given up this season on three PK attempts.
The Titans came back, like they always do, in the 39th minute on a goal by Christian Pinzon for his fourth of the season. Mark Hernandez set the play up, making a great run down the left side of the field while using impressive footwork to get past a defender and drop off a perfect pass to Pinzon.
Guerin recorded six saves in the match, including four in the second half. The junior goalkeeper now has 66 saves, ranking him first in the Big West Conference.
UC Irvine won a free kick early in the second overtime period and put a shot in front of the net and Canales scored on a rebound in the 102nd minute
The Titans move to 2-2-1 in Big West play with 7 points and now looks to bounce back Saturday afternoon as the team heads north to battle UC Davis at Aggie Soccer Field.
