Men's Soccer Sweeps Player of the Week Honors

IRVINE, Calif. – After back-to-back shutout victories over Cal Poly and Sacramento State this week, the Titans swept Big West Player of the Week honors as goalkeeper Paul-Andre Guerin was named defensive and Samuel Goni was named offensive player of the week, the conference announced Monday.

"We are grateful for the acknowledgment of two very prominent players in college soccer," said Head Coach George Kuntz. "Although these are historical given what the Cal State Fullerton men's soccer program has accomplished, we are more proud of the team and the journey of this program."

It is the first time in the history of the program the Titans have won both offensive and defensive player of the week in the same week.

Samuel Goni had a foot in both Cal State Fullerton wins, leading to his first selection this season as Offensive Player of the Week. Earning his second career honor, Goni produced the game-winning assist in the Titans 2-0 victory over Cal Poly and notched the game-winning goal in a 1-0 triumph against Sacramento State.

Goni took over sole possession of the team lead in goals with his fifth of the year while also leading the team in points with 12.

The senior scored just 18 seconds into the second half as he took a thorough ball from Oscar Flores and beat the keeper to the far post.  It was Goni's second game-winner of the year. Goni took five shots for the week, putting three of those on frame.

Paul-Andre Guerin registered a pair of shutouts – his fifth and sixth of the season – to earn his second Defensive Player of the Week honor this month.

Guerin made a total of nine saves to help the Titans defeat Cal Poly 2-0 and Sacramento State 1-0 at home, which moved them into a tie for second in the Big West standings.

"Getting shutouts is a team effort. It starts with the forwards who are the first defenders," Guerin said. "I'm glad I get credit for that by being named defensive player of the week but it's more recognition for the entire team."

The junior made three stops against the Mustangs and six more versus the Hornets. Guerin now has 14 career shutouts, putting him in sole possession of fifth all-time in Titan history. The junior leads the nation in minutes played at 14:55.09.
