FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's soccer couldn't extend its winning streak Sunday night, falling to Cornell 2-1 at Titan Stadium.
The Titans (2-2-3)struck first and early, scoring in the 17th minute on a beautiful goal from just outside the 18-yard box by Ross McPhie who snuck it in past the goalkeeper on the short corner. It is McPhie's first goal of the season.
Senior Robert Coronado picked up the assist on the goal to McPhie, giving him 13 for his career while needing just two more to move into a tie for eighth all-time in the history of the program.
Once again, it seemed like a tale of two halves for the Titans. Early on Fullerton out-played Cornell, earning seven shots to their four shots in the first half. While also earning three corner kicks to the Big Reds just one corner kick.
In the second half Cornell came back to get six shots, five of them on goal. Paul-Andre Guerin came up with some big saves yet again, recording five on the night, but wasn't able to stop two in the second half. Szabolcs Wiksell tied the game up in the 66th minute before Emeka Eneli gave Big Red the lead in the 73rd minute.
Fullerton now looks to rebound as they hit the road, traveling to the East Coast to take on Florida Gulf Coast Wednesday at 4 p.m. PT.
