FULLERTON, Calif. – Following a midweek game against No. 1 UCLA, the Titans return to Big West Conference play as UC Irvine comes to Goodwin Field for the battle of Orange County beginning Friday night.
The Titans head into the series with a 16-20 overall record and in fifth place in the Big West with a 4-5 conference record. UC Irvine is 26-9 on the year and are in third place in the Big West with a conference record of 8-4.
Historically the Titans have had the Anteaters number. Fullerton is 88-28 against UC Irvine going all the way back to 1976 and are 39-17 when playing at Goodwin Field. Last season the Titans swept the Anteaters in the conference series at Anteater Ballpark. Fullerton is 17-3 in the last 20 games against the Anteaters and have not lost the season series since 2009.
Senior Mitchell Berryhill has been on a tear for the Titans through 36 games this season. Berryhill leads the team with a .442 batting average which ranks second in the entire country and leads the Big West Conference. If Berryhill is able to keep his batting average over .440 he will have the highest batting average for a single season in the history of the program.
The senior leads the team with 18 multiple hit games and is second on the team in multiple RBI games with seven leading to a total of 23 RBI. In conference play this season, Berryhill's numbers have gotten even better as he is hitting .515 with seven RBI and eight walks to go along with a .619 on-base percentage and a .636 slugging percentage.
The Utah native is on a 45 game on-base streak dating back to the 2018 season which is the longest active streak in the country and is the third longest streak this season behind teammate Hank LoForte (64) and Vanderbilt's JJ Bleday (47).
Fullerton's Friday night starter will be Tanner Bibee who has set a career-high with four wins on the season. Bibee is 5-5 this year and has been the pitcher of record in every single start this season and has gone no fewer than five innings in all 10 starts. Bibee has a team-best 3.48 ERA along with a team-high 59 strikeouts in 67.1 innings pitched this season.
