FULLERTON, Calif. - After the Cal State Fullerton women's cross country team won the Big West Championship last weekend, head coach John Elders was named Big West Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year on Thursday.
Elders is the longest tenured coach in school history and claimed his first Coach of the Year honor in cross country. He led the Titan women to their first team championship with 44 points, besting UC Davis and Cal Poly with 50 and 51, respectively. He, along with assistant coach Alex Tebbe guided three runners to top-10 finishes, including runner-up Samantha Huerta who tied school record for best finish at the conference meet. In addition, Trinity Ruelas place third (20:39.2) and Sarah Hollis 10th (21:09.4) en route to the team championship. The program has made steady improvement year over year as previous Big West meet finishes included fifth (2015), fourth (2016), third (2017) and second (2018).
Next up, the Titans will compete at the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 15 in Colfax, Wash. That meet will determine if either the men's or women's teams or individuals from those teams qualify for the NCAA Championships Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
