Huerta clocked a school-record time of 2:03.96 in the women's 800 meters to take fourth place in her heat and ninth overall to become the first Titan ever to compete in the event at the NCAA Championships. Her previous school record was 2:04.33.
"She ran an amazing race," head coach John Elders said. "The UNLV runner took it out fast and I think that helped Samantha. We had to mix it up a bit, because she's confident running in front but this race went out really hard so she couldn't get to the front. But she put herself in good position to make a move and stay free from getting boxed in. She ran a really good race, tactically. Then the home stretch, they were all hauling and she just missed hanging onto third. I felt pretty confident after the second heat that she would qualify and she did. I'm very happy for her."
Mason Rollins clocked a time of 21.29 (+2.4 wind) in the 200-meter sprint. He took 38th place and did not advance to the quarterfinal round.
In the men's 3K steeplechase, Jorge Sanchez (34th place) finished in 9:08.65 while Anthony Alfaro (46th place) clocked a time of 9:25.06. They did not advance to Austin.
Sierra Valdivieso posted a mark of 147-11 (45.08m) in the women's discus and finished in 47th place overall.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team will compete at 6 p.m. PT in heat one lane one. The men's 4x400-meter relay is set for 9:45 p.m. with the Titans running in lane four of heat two.
