FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton track and field added Deja Allain, Maya Occiano and Sierrah Rivera to the women's squad and Nathyn Scruggs to the men's squad as the quartet signed National Letters of Intent to join the Titan program in the fall of 2019.
Allain, a native of Riverside, Calif., is currently in her senior season at La Sierra High School. As a sprinter, Allain competed in the 200 meters and 400 meters as a junior and also ran legs on the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. She clocked personal-best times of 24.66 (second place) and 56.65 (third place) in the aforementioned events at the Inland Empire Championships. She went on to win both events at the Raincross Tradition City Championships with times 25.01 and 58.18.
Allain and her teammates qualified for the CIF-SS Division 3 preliminaries in both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. The quartet clocked a 4x100 time of 50.79 (16th place) and 4:14.23 (15th place) in the 4x400-meter relay.
Occiano, is what sprints coach Marques Barosso called a pure athlete with a lot of raw talent. She is in her senior year at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos. Her primary focus at Fullerton will be on the 400-meter hurdles. As a junior in high school, she qualified for the CIF SDS Finals in the 300-meter hurdles and took third place with a personal-best time of 43.67. She also ran on the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay teams. In the 4x1 and the 4x4, both her and her teammates ran in the CIF State Championships prelims.
Rivera is what Barosso calls an all-around sprinter and will run each of the 100, 200 and 400 meters at Fullerton. She is in her senior year at Green Valley High School in Henderson, Nev. In each of the three aforementioned events, Rivera ran at the NIAA 4A State Championships, taking third place in the 100m (12.29), fourth place in the 200m (24.91) and third place in the 400m (57.47). She also ran a leg on the 4x400-meter relay team that took eighth place at the NIAA 4A State Championships. In those three events she has personal-best marks of 12.11, 24.78 and 57.13.
Scruggs is in his senior year at Clovis North High School. Barosso feels that he will come in and add depth to our short sprinters next season. "He has the type of work ethic and love for track every coach looks for," said Barosso. As a junior he posted times of 11.15 in the 100 meters and 21.78 in the 200 meters. He ran on the North Clovis 4x100-meter relay team that took second place in the CIF State Championship Finals and competed at the New Balance Nationals.
