Fullerton, Calif. - Brittany Moore and Alex Wolnisty combined for 30 kills as Cal State Fullerton defeated visiting Cal State Northridge 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17 in a Big West Conference volleyball match at Titan Gym Saturday night.
With the win, Fullerton improves to 14-14 on the year and 7-6 in Big West Conference play. The seventh conference win for Fullerton ties a school record for the most league wins in a season. Last year, the 2007 squad finished with seven to set the record. Northridge drops its 17th match of its last 19 and falls to 7-20, 1-12.
The two teams played a close match until late in the fourth set where Fullerton pulled away for good. Fullerton out-hit Northridge .180 to .124 and out-blocked them .8.0 to 7.0 as a team.
Moore and Andrea Ragan both notched double-doubles. Moore with 16 kills and 20 digs, and Ragan with 40 assists, 17 digs. It was Moore's 14th double double of the season, and Ragan's sixth. Northridge's Angela Hupp and setter Sam Orlandini also had double-doubles in the loss.
Wolnisty notched 14 kills in 28 swings and posted five blocks (one solo) while hitting .321 on the evening.
Two Matadors had double digits in kills, led by Angela Hupp who colleted 16 while scooping 18 digs and putting up four block assists. Hupp's dig totals paced the Matador squad which showcased four players with 12-or-more.
Moore became Fullerton's all-time block assists leader collecting her 288th block assist of her career. The senior came into the match tied with Alyssa Opeka with 287, but tacked on the record breaker in the first frame to set the new career record.
Erin Saddler connected for five of the Titans' six service aces on the night. She also posted 12 kills in the win.
Fullerton next travels to Davis and Stockton, Calif., for their next matches against UC Davis (Nov. 14) and Pacific (Nov. 15). Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
