Riverside, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton (17-4, 6-1) held off late-surging UC Riverside (2-19, 0-7) in sets 2 and 3, but finished with a 25-11, 26-24, 25-23 sweep to keep them alone atop the Big West Conference standings Sunday afternoon.
With a 2-0 set lead after the break, the Titans jumped out front to a commanding 22-13 lead in set three. But before the Titans could make a final push, the Highlanders went on a 9-0 run to tie the set at 22-22. A kill by Amanda Vialpando gave the Highlanders a brief 23-22 lead, but then an Erin Saddler kill, a Vialpando error and an Andrea Ragan/Leah Maurer combo-block sealed the deal for the Titans, giving them their sixth win in a row and 13th in their last 14 matches.
Fifteen of the Titans' 17 victories have come by way of the 3-0 sweep of their opponents.
Torrie Brown led the Titans with 13 kills and hit a dominant .444 on the afternoon. She was flanked offensively by Kayla Neto (.375) and Saddler (.304) with 12 additional kills apiece. The Titans hit a combined .351 as a team and held the home team to just a .193 clip.
Defensively, the Titans out-dug the Highlanders 46-31 and out-blocked them 9.0 to 5.5. Neto led all players with 5 blocks She and Maurer combined for nine blocks together while Cami Croteau led all players with 18 digs.
For Riverside, Shelby Leduff, Kelly Simpson and Vialpando combined for 31 of its 38 kills on the afternoon. Simpson led the team with 3 block assists while Katie Meyers and Leduff each collected 9 digs each.
Fullerton will put its second-longest winning streak of its program's existence and a record 11-0 home mark put on the line next week as it hosts Long Beach State. The 49ers ended the Titans' longest ever winning streak of seven matches back on Sept. 25 with a 3-0 sweep at the Walter Pyramid.
