Fullerton, Calif. - Erin Saddler, Kayla Neto and Alex Wolnisty combined for 39 of the Titans' 47 kills and led Cal State Fullerton to a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 sweep of Big West Conference foe UC Santa Barbara Saturday night at Titan Gym.
The Titans improved to 11-5 on the year and 2-1 in league action. Despite having beat the Gauchos in four of their last six meetings, the Titans are just 4-54 against then since 1980.
UC Santa Barbara, coming into the week as the leading vote-getters not in the AVCA Top 25, falls to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in conference. The Gauchos go 0-2 on the week falling to both Long Beach State and Fullerton on consecutive nights.
Fullerton hit the ball with accuracy Saturday night, committing just 11 errors on the attack while hitting.324, their second highest percentage of the year. Neto paced the offense by hitting .545 on the night with 13 kills. Saddler connected for a match high 15 kills.
Fullerton held the reigning Big West and national player of the week Rebecca Saraceno to 14 kills (.355), three aces, and seven digs, by far the best numbers from the visiting team. The Gauchos hit just .235 as a team and committed 24 unforced errors from the floor and the service line. Chelsey Lowe led all players defensively with 13 digs in the loss.
Cami Croteau was the only Titan in double figures in digs. She collected 10.
Fullerton out-blocked Santa Barbara in a light night at the net 5.0 to 2.0. Neto proved to be the leading blocker with a pair of stuffs (one solo).
The Titans are now 3-2 in matches against opponents being recognized by the AVCA. Fullerton beat The Gauchos and Wisconsin (both receiving votes), and then-No. 7 UCLA, while dropping matches to Baylor and then No. 25 Long Beach State.
Fullerton will return to the floor next weekend as they travel to Northern California to face Pacific (Oct. 9) and UC Davis (Oct. 10). Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
