Riverside, Calif. - Senior Brittany Moore led the Titans to their first Big West Conference victory with a strong 21-kill, 21-dig performance as Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Riverside 3-2 in a see-saw battle at the Student Recreation Center Friday night.
The (22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-12, 15-10) win snapped the Titans three-match losing streak and improved their record to 7-10 on the year, and 1-2 in league play. The loss for the Highlanders was their seventh straight against Cal State Fullerton and they fall to 5-12, 0-2. Fullerton has not lost in Riverside since 2002.
UC Riverside's Kelly Fink and Dominique Cowling each squared up for 14 kills in the losing effort.
Coming off a very lackluster set No. 4, the Titans turned their game around and jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start set No. 5 after Saddler's second ace of the frame. A solo block and a kill by Moore and a kill by Jennifer Edmond gave the Titans a commanding 10-2 lead they would need to pull off the win. The Highlanders clawed their way back to 10-14, but Saddler's 13th and final kill put the game away and gave the Titans their second five-game win in as many tries this year.
Fullerton out-hit Riverside .215 to.199 on the evening but was out-blocked 11.0 to 7.0. Riverside's Shannon Moyneur picked up a match-leading 7 block assists while her teammate Amy Read finished close behind with six. Andrea Ragan and Wolnisty paced the Fullerton squad with four block assists apiece.
Fullerton's defense was strong down the stretch with key digs coming from Moore, Cami Croteau, Edmond and Ashley Collier. Moore led all players on the night with 21 digs, with Croteau and Edmond also posted 11-or-more each to combine for 23 digs. Cowling had 13 on the night to lead UCR's defense.
Cal State Fullerton will return to the court tomorrow night at UC Irvine in another Big West match. First serve will take place at 7 p.m. in Irvine.
