Fullerton, Calif. - Despite a match-leading 10 kills by Brittany Moore, Cal State Fullerton fell in three sets to No. 25 Cal Poly, 21-25, 14-25, 14-25, in the opening match of Big West Conference volleyball play Friday night at Titan Gym.
The Titans fall to 0-1 in league action and 6-9 overall with the loss to the defending Big West champs. The Mustangs snap a five match losing streak and improve to 5-7, 1-0.
The Titans hit their match-best .152 as a team in set one and hung with the Mustangs up to 19-20 before the visitors reeled off five points over the last eight exchanges. Brittany Moore and Alex Wolnisty both came up with four kills apiece, but three Cal Poly service aces, one more kill, and a Titan service error gave the Mustangs the set one victory.
The Titans again played tough half way through the third set, holding a lead as late as 11-10. But Cal Poly's Kylie Atherstone and Dominique Olowolafe led a Mustang charge that saw them combine for six of the team's 12 kills without an error. The duo also posted team-high numbers in the kill column, posting nine apiece one the night.
Three Cal Poly players had double figures in digs, with Allison Mort leading the way with a match-high 17. Fullerton's Cami Croteau had 12 in the loss.
Fullerton was out-blocked 6.0 to 2.0 with Cal Poly's Jaclyn Houston leading the way with 4 block assists. Sydney McDowell and Erin Saddler provided the Titan defense with a pair of block assists each.
The Titans will return to the court tomorrow night as they host UC Santa Barbara in a 7:00 p.m. match at Titan Gym.
