San Diego, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton sophomore Bre Moreland connected for a match-high 6 kills and scooped up 10 digs but the Titans were unable to hold off San Diego State, dropping a five-set, non-conference match, 25-20-14-25, 19-25, 25-18, 8-15, Tuesday night on Aztec Court.
The Titans fall to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in five-set matches heading into this weekend's Big West Conference openers with Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Titans were one set away from winning their first-ever match at San Diego State, but fell to 0-18 all-time as the Aztecs out-slugged them .375 to .000 in the final frame.
San Diego State improved to 6-3.
Moreland and Kayla Neto (12 kills and 12 digs) logged double-doubles for Fullerton while Johnna Fouch (51 assists and 15 digs) and Summer Nash (10 kills and 13 digs) doubled up for San Diego State.
The Aztecs as a team landed 57 total kills to the Titans' 50 and out-hit the Titans .172 to .137 despite committing three more errors. Their serving game and presence at the net seemed to be the deciding factors.
The Aztecs served up a storm for the Titan receivers, landing 11 service aces on the night. They were led by Paije Pearson who tallied four aces and Fouch who served up three. Fullerton servers had just two on the night, both coming off the hand of Neto.
SDSU out-blocked the Titans in the match 12.0 to 9.0 and were led at the net by Andrea Hannasch who had her hand in nine blocks on the evening. Hanasch was one of five Aztecs with three-or-more blocks. Ragan and Leah Best led the way for Fullerton stopping five Aztec attacks each.
The Titans now look to the weekend as they begin their defense of the Big West crown against the teams of the Central Coast. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. Friday night's match is Youth Night. All kids 12-and-under will receive free admission to the match. Saturday night is Pink Night. Those wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness will also receive free admission to the match.
