Bears Stay Golden with Sweep; Clinch Tourney Title
Sept. 20, 2008
Fullerotn, Calif. - No. 9 Cal swept Cal State Fullerton to finish the weekend a perfect 3-0 and clinch the Crowne Plaza Fullerton Volleyball Classic championship at Titan Gym Saturday afternoon.
Tournament MVP Hana Cutura led all players with 13 kills as the Bears defeated the Titans 25-19, 25-16, 25-22 to improve to 10-1 on the year. The Titans dropped to 6-8 after experiencing their fourth ranked team in their last nine matches, completing their non-conference tournament schedule.
Brittany Moore paced the Titan offense with 10 kills, and added an ace, eight digs and a block assist en route to her third all-tournament team mention in four tourneys.
Fullerton, like San Francisco earlier in the day, gave the Golden Bears their share of troubles throughout the evening, but the Pac-10 visitors over-powered the Titans with a .361 overall attack percentage. The Titans hit .189 on the night, and never hit higher than .267 in any set.
Cal's Am're Solomon also finished in double-digits with 10 kills and hit .429 to boot. Cutura and Kristen Kathan each scooped 11 digs for the Bears while Fullerton's libero Cami Croteau neared double figures with nine of her own from the back row.
Fullerton returns to the court next Friday to open Big West Conference play. The Titans will face their fifth ranked opponent of the year in Cal Poly on Sept. 26, then will host UC Santa Barbara the following night. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. at Titan Gym.
IN THE AFTERNOON MATCH: San Francisco (7-4) handed Central Connecticut State (3-9) its third straight loss in the tournament and secured the runner-up spot in the Fullerton Classic. Sarah Mandala posted a match-high 17 kills and hit .512 as the Dons took care of the Blue Devils 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16. Lauren Snyder led the Blue Devil squad with 15 kills while Jaime Boumert posted 11 kills of her own and also added five blocks (2 solos) in the losing effort.
