Los Angeles - Trojan standout Alex Jupiter had 23 kills to pace No. 10 USC to a 3-1 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton to claim the Luxe City Center Trojan Invitational championship Saturday night at the Galen Center.
USC Improves to a perfect 3-0 on the year after claiming wins over Loyola Marymount, Bucknell and Fullerton. Fullerton drops to 1-2 on the year and finished in 3rd place behind 2-1 LMU.
Jupiter was the player of the game and was named to the all-tournament team after also posting 10 digs and three aces, but she was helped out offensively by three other with double figures in kills. Lauren Williams had 14 kills without an error and was also was named to the all-tourney team; Falyn Fonoimoana scored 14 kills and tacked on three blocks; and Zoe Garrett had 10 kills in the22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-19 victory.
Trojan setter Kendall Bateman had 66 assists on the evening and was named the tournament's MVP for her outstanding play in all three matches.
Fullerton's Erin Saddler had quite a showing against the Pac-10 opponent, blasting 19 kills while also picking up 4 blocks at the net (1 solo, 3 assists). Saddler and Titan libero Cami Croteau were named to the all-tournament team.
Behind Saddler, Kayla Neto had 15 kills and hit .500 on the night.
Croteau, who became the Titans' leader in digs in the afternoon match, picked up 18 digs in the nightcap and also added a service ace.
The Titans came out strong, holding their own in the first two sets, but USC seemed to pick up momentum with each set played as well as within each set. In a bit of a moral victory for the Titans, there were 27 ties and 10 lead changes in the match and they out-blocked the Trojans 7.0 to 3.0.
Cal State Fullerton now returns home to open up their home schedule in the Crowne Plaza Fullerton Titan Classic Sept. 3-4, with visiting Montana, Georgia State and Colorado.
