FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton graduate Darren Ong has been added to the women's volleyball coaching staff, it was announced by head coach Carolyn Zimmerman on Wednesday.
"I am very excited to have Darren join our staff," Zimmerman said. "We are so fortunate that he can volunteer his time every day to be an additional coach in our gym. He has gained a wealth of experience over the years, and most recently coaching club volleyball with Mizuno Long Beach. We look forward to his contributions in the office and on the court."
A native of Garden Grove, Calif., Ong graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2011 with a degree in business administration and an emphasis in marketing. He also played two years on the men's club team at Fullerton (2009-10).
Since 2007, Ong has been active in the Southern California volleyball community, spending four seasons at his alma mater, Garden Grove High School, in such capacities as the boys' varsity assistant (2007-08), the girls' varsity assistant (2008-09) and the boys' varsity head coach (2009-10).
In the spring of 2009, Ong took over the reins of the boys' varsity program, leading the Argonauts to a Garden Grove League championship as the team finished the year with its first undefeated league season.
In 2010, Ong continued at Garden Grove as the boys' varsity head coach while also serving as the junior varsity girls' head coach at Cypress High School as well as assisting with the varsity team. The Centurions advanced to the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 3AA quarterfinals in 2010.
Most recently, Ong served as the girls' junior varsity head coach and the varsity assistant at Whittier High School in 2012.
In addition, Ong is currently in his fourth year with the Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club based in Hermosa Beach, Calif., and has coached athletes from ages 12-18. In 2010 and 2011, Ong served as an assistant to the Rockstar 14U club that finished as silver medalists competing at the Junior National Championships in back-to-back years.
Ong is also a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
He graduated from Garden Grove High School in 2005 after spending three years on the boys' varsity squad.
Long-time volunteer assistant coach Anthony Mirabal will now serve as Cal State Fullerton's director of operations.
