FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton freshman shortstop Gabby Aragon was named the Big West Conference's Player of the Week on Monday following a tremendous showing at the plate last weekend against UC Davis.
Aragon collects the first award of her brief Titan career and becomes the third Fullerton player to win the league's weekly award this season, joining teammates Trina Harrison (March 22) and Ari Cervantes (April 5).
The Garden Grove native entered the weekend hitting just .156 on the year, but doubled her season hit total in just three games against the Aggies, finishing the weekend batting 7-for-10 (.700) while slugging 1.300 and "hitting for the cycle" with a double, triple, home run, and four singles in the series.
She also scored four times and drove in four runs, opening the weekend with a 4-for-7 performance in the series-opening doubleheader, including an RBI triple that broke a 1-1 tie in game two and later scoring the run that made it a 3-1 Titan advantage later in the inning.
Aragon saved her best performance for last, however, finishing a triple short of the true cycle in Sunday's 6-3 victory, going 3-for-3 while slugging her second career home run as part of a four-run second inning and later notching a double and a single to help Fullerton snap its six-game losing streak.
She led the team in nearly every major hitting category (average, hits, runs, extra base hits, RBI, and total bases) while also going errorless in 16 chances on the infield. Her three multi-hit games doubled her season total, giving her six on the year, while extending her team-best hitting streak to five consecutive games.
Thanks to her performance, Aragon upped her overall season batting average nearly 100 points to .255 on the year.
Cal State Fullerton hits the road for two of its final three Big West series in 2010, beginning next weekend in Stockton against Pacific. The series opens with a doubleheader on Saturday (May 1) at 12 p.m. with Sunday's (May 2) single-game finale also beginning at noon.
