FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton freshman Samantha Dollarhide and sophomore right-hander Ari Cervantes were named the Big West Conference Player and Co-Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday morning after helping the Titans to a 4-1 showing at the prestigious Judi Garman Classic over the weekend.
It is the first career conference weekly laurels for both players and the first for a Fullerton player or pitcher this season.
Dollarhide was one of the tournament's top hitters during the Judi Garman Classic, batting .538 (7-for-13) for the week while slugging a pair of doubles, her first career home run, and driving home five runs in helping the Titans to a share of the tournament title.
She ranked among the top 10 in average (3rd), slugging (.923 - 5th), on-base percentage (.571 - 5th), hits (7th), and total bases (6th). Dollarhide had multiple hits in three of the games, including her first career home run against No. 20 DePaul, and drove in three of Fullerton's seven runs on the night against Bowling Green - including the game-winning two-run single in the Titans' 7-3 victory.
Against No. 9 Oklahoma, Dollarhide had two hits against the Sooners, including the game-winning walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the seventh and, the next day, doubled and scored the game-winning run in Fullerton's 3-2 win over No. 2 Washington.
Cervantes duplicated her teammate's efforts in the circle, finishing as one of the tournament's top hurlers. The sophomore posted a 3-1 record and a 1.50 ERA for the week while earning the victory against a pair of top-10 teams.
She opened the tournament with a three-hit shutout of Texas and followed up a hard-luck loss to No. 20 DePaul with masterful performances in wins over No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 2 Washington, allowing just three runs on five hits to beat the Sooners while shutting down the Huskies' vaunted offense, scattering just five hits and allowing just one earned run in the 3-2 win.
Opponents hit just .176 against Cervantes on the week and finished ranked among the tournament leads in ERA (8th), opposing batting average (6th), innings pitched (2nd), and wins (t2nd).
Cal State Fullerton returns to the diamond next weekend as the Titans take on San Diego State in single games in San Diego on Friday at 6 p.m. and in Fullerton on Saturday at 1 p.m.
