FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton sophomore Jenna Wheeler went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to help lift the Titans to an 8-2 victory over visiting UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference match-up on Sunday afternoon in Fullerton, Calif.
Fullerton improved to 21-17 overall and 2-1 in Big West play. UCSB fell to 15-11 overall, 1-2 in league action.
The Titans jumped out early against Gauchos' starter Jennifer Davis (10-8), scoring single runs in the first two innings thanks to a wild pitch in the first and an RBI single by junior Ashley Van Boxmeer in the second to make it 2-0.
Cal State Fullerton then broke the game wide open with a four-run fifth inning as sophomore Kiki Munoz doubled home a pair of runs to make it 4-0 and was immediately followed by Wheeler, who cranked the second pitch she saw from Davis over the fence in left for her fourth round-tripper of the season and make it 6-0.
UC Santa Barbara, which stranded 12 runners on the day - including seven in scoring position, would claw back with a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Liz Walters to knock Fullerton starter Marissa Marzan (5-6) from the game and a bases-loaded walk to Jessica Hejna off reliever Candice Baker to close the gap to 6-2.
However, that would be as close as the Gauchos would come as the Titans added two more runs on a two-run single by Wheeler down the right field line in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Baker would then stifle any sort of rally in the seventh by UC Santa Barbara as she walked a batter and hit another before striking out Danielle Meyers swinging to end the game.
Marzan went five innings, charged with two runs on six hits, walking four and striking out six. Baker pitched the final two innings in relief without allowing a hit and striking out three.
Davis suffered the loss, allowing six runs on six hits and walking four in four innings of work.
Aside from Wheeler, Van Boxmeer also added a pair of hits with four other Titans had single base knocks on the day. Christine Ramos led all UCSB players with a 2-for-4 day.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action next weekend (April 8-9) as the Titans continue Big West play with a three-game series at Cal State Northridge.
