FULLERTON, CA - Sophomore righthander Ari Cervantes tossed a three-hit shutout and sophomore Torrie Anderson launched her sixth home run of the season for the game's only run as host Cal State Fullerton opened the 2009 Judi Garman Classic with a 1-0 victory over Texas on Wednesday night at Anderson Family Field.
The Titans improved to 9-12 overall on the season, snapping a three-game winless streak against the Longhorns in the all-time series. With the loss, Texas fell to 17-7 overall.
Cervantes (6-6) was masterful in the circle, allowing single hits in the second, fourth, and seventh innings and stranding three runners in scoring position for the game. The shutout was the first of her career as she also struck out five without walking a batter.
Brittany Barnhill (8-3) suffered the loss, allowing the single run on five hits, walking two and striking out eight in the complete-game effort.
The only run of the game came off Anderson's bat in the third as she lined the second pitch she saw from Barnhill over the wall in right field to make it 1-0. Freshman Morgan LeMond and senior Lauren Lupinetti each finished 2-for-3 to pace the Titans' offense on the night.
Texas threatened to tie the game up in the fourth, getting a lead-off double by Amy Hooks, but the runner was stranded thanks to three successive fly balls to end the inning. The Longhorns also got the tying run in scoring position in the fifth as Kacie Gaskin reached on an error and was moved up on a wild pitch, but Cervantes struck out the next batter she faced to end the threat.
Brittany Chalk led Texas with two of the team's three hits on the night.
Cal State Fullerton continues tournament play on Thursday evening (March 12) at 5:30 p.m. as the Titans take on No. 20 DePaul at Anderson Family Field. The Longhorns play twice on Thursday, facing Bowling Green and Penn State in back-to-back games beginning at 11 a.m.
