Titans Fall In 10-Inning Marathon to Iowa
March 8, 2009
FULLERTON, CA - A two-out tie-breaking double by Sam Heinzman in the top of the tenth plated a pair of runs and right-hander Brittany Weil struck out nine in the complete-game effort to help lift visiting Iowa to the 3-1 victory on Sunday morning at Anderson Family Field.
Fullerton's three-game winning streak was snapped with the loss as the Titans fell to 8-12 overall on the season. The Hawkeyes improved to 16-4 overall with the victory.
Katie Keim led-off the inning with an infield double that took a bad hop and sailed away from the defense. Fullerton starter Ari Cervantes (5-6) looked like she was going to escape without any damage, getting two quick strikeouts, but a walk put runners on the corners for Heinzman, who blooped a double into the gap in left centerfield that was misplayed by the outfield, allowing Keim and Liz Watkins to come home.
A pop up on a sacrifice attempt and another fielder's choice by Cervantes left runners on the corners with two outs, but the tying run was moved into scoring position on a steal by Cervantes. Weil (10-3) shut the door, however, inducing a line-out to shortstop to end the game.
Cervantes struck out a career-high 12 batters in the 10-inning effort, allowing two earned runs on six hits and allowing only one runner to reach second base through the regulation seven innings.
Weil was tagged with an unearned run on seven hits and walking one in 10 innings of work to earn the victory.
Fullerton struck first in the opening inning as Torrie Anderson roped a one-out double down the left field line and moved to third when the ensuing throw to the infield was misplayed. That brought up sophomore K.C. Craddick, who singled to left field to plate Anderson for the 1-0 lead.
Iowa rallied for the tying run in the sixth as Heinzman tripled to right centerfield with one out and scored on Erin Riemersma's sacrifice fly to left to make it a 1-1 ballgame.
Craddick and junior Francesca Gonzales each finished 2-for-4 on the day while three other players ended with hits. Keim and Heinzman each had two hits to lead the Hawkeyes.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the diamond on Wednesday (March 11) as the Titans host Texas at 5:30 p.m. in the opener of the 2009 Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field.
