Titans Swept on Final Day of Invite

FULLERTON, CA - The Cal State Fullerton softball team closed out the 2009 DeMarini Invitational with a pair of losses on Sunday afternoon, falling to Auburn by the score of 6-1 before being shutout by No. 5 Stanford, 7-0, to close out tournament play.
The losses dropped the Titans to 5-11 overall and extended their losing streak to seven consecutive games. The Tigers improved to 17-4 with their victory while the Cardinal moved to 18-1, winning the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record.
In the opener, Auburn's Anna Thompson allowed just one run on six hits while striking out 14 batters on the day to help lift the Tigers to victory.
Thompson (10-2) and her defense stranded 10 Fullerton baserunners on the day as the Titans left runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings and five of the seven overall. Six different Fullerton batters had hits, including a double by junior Sheila Holguin in the first and a home run by sophomore Torrie Anderson - her third of the season - in the fifth.
Auburn got on the board first in the second inning as a sacrifice fly by Morgan Murphy plated the first run of the game. The Tigers added three more in the third on a three-run home run to right centerfield by Tatiana Fernandez and they tacked on two more in the fourth on an RBI single by Myesha Finney and an RBI groundout by Lauren Guzman to cap the scoring.
Freshman Krystal Heinle (3-4) suffered the loss, allowing all six runs on 10 hits in the complete-game effort. Fellow freshman Samantha Dollarhide notched her first career hit at the Division I level in the sixth inning as part of the Titans' six-hit attack.
In the nightcap, Stanford's Missy Penna tossed a two-hit shutout while Shannon Koplitz and Alyssa Haber each finished with three hits to pace the Cardinal.
Penna (12-1) struck out six while allowing just three baserunners on the day - none of whom reached second base, facing just three batters over the minimum in the victory. Sophomore Ari Cervantes (2-5) suffered the loss for the Titans, allowing all seven runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work.
Koplitz, who finished with three RBI on the day, drove home the first two runs of the game in the first with single back up the middle as the first four Cardinal reached base. Stanford added a run in the second on an RBI triple by Haber and three more in the fourth on a pair of RBI fielder's choice's and a run-scoring single by Koplitz to make it 6-0.
An RBI single by Rosey Neill capped the scoring in the sixth, plating Haber, who scored three runs on the day.
Freshman Trina Harrison finished with the first multi-hit game of her career for the Titans, finishing 2-for-3 on the day.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the diamond next weekend, taking part in the Long Beach Invitational which will be held in Lakewood, Calif., and at Anderson Family Field. The Titans will host Syracuse on Friday night (March 6) at 6 p.m. before taking on Florida International and Longwood University on Saturday (March 7) in Lakewood. Fullerton then returns home to host Iowa on Sunday morning (March 8) at 9 a.m.
