FRESNO, CA - The Cal State Fullerton softball team finished its final day at the Fresno State Round-Robin with a split, opening with a 9-1 defeat of Santa Clara in six innings before falling to the host Bulldogs, 8-0, in six innings on Sunday at Bulldog Diamond in Fresno, Calif.
The split moved the Titans to 5-6 overall on the season as they finished their road trip 3-3. The Broncos fell to 1-8 after the loss with a game against Fresno State remaining later Sunday while the Bulldogs improved to 6-2 with their victory.
Cal State Fullerton returns to the diamond next week among the field at the 2012 Cathedral City Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, Calif. The Titans open with games against Georgia and Boise State on Thursday (Feb. 23) before taking New Mexico on Friday (Feb. 24) and closing out with Ohio State and Fordham on Saturday (Feb. 25).
GAME 1: CAL STATE FULLERTON 9, SANTA CLARA 1 (6 inn.)
After banging out a season-high 15 hits against Santa Clara on Saturday, the Fullerton offense didn't miss a beat against the Broncos on Sunday, slugging 13 hits in a run-rule shortened 9-1 victory in the Titans' opener.
Redshirt freshman Eliza Crawford finished 3-for-4 for Fullerton to lead a quartet of Fullerton hitters with multiple hits while junior Tiffany Sheffler finished 1-for-4 while driving in four runs on the day. Anissa Young finished 1-for-1 with two runs scored and three walks.
Junior Aly Fascetti (3-3) earned the win in the circle, needing just 64 pitches to dispatch of Santa Clara. She allowed just one run on five hits in six innings and striking out four. Briana Rios (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and walking four in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Sheffler's bases-loaded, three-run triple was the big blow in a four-run first inning for the Titans as freshman Emily Vizcarra added an RBI single to stake Fascetti to a 4-0 lead. A run-scoring single by Morgan LeMond in the second upped Fullerton's lead to 5-0 before the Broncos struck back in the fourth on Briana Knight's second home run of the season to cut the deficit back to four.
That would be all the offense for Santa Clara, however, as the Broncos were held to just two more hits while the Titans added four more runs in the sixth to close out the game. LeMond added her second RBI single in the sixth to get the scoring started while an error plated two more runs to make it 8-1. After chasing Rios, Leesa Harris added an RBI single off reliever Jessica Turner to make it 9-1.
Fascetti then shut the door in the sixth after a lead-off single as a fielder's choice, fly out, and ground out ended the game.
GAME 2: FRESNO STATE 8, CAL STATE FULLERTON 0 (6 inn.)
Fresno State right-hander Mackenzie Oakes pitched the third no-hitter of her career and the host Bulldogs scored two runs in the final four innings of the game to shutout Cal State Fullerton.
Courtney Moore's second home run of the season in the third, a two-run shot to center, was more than enough for Oakes, who allowed only two baserunners on a walk in the fourth to Eliza Crawford and an error in the sixth on a ball hit by Kirsten Lambertson. Fresno State added two runs in the fourth on a wild pitch and a Michelle Moses sacrifice fly and a two-run double by Stesha Brazil in the fifth after an error prolonged the inning to make it 6-0.
The Bulldogs closed it out with RBI singles in the sixth by Michelle Solomon and Kaitlin Griffin to end the game.
Oakes (3-0) walked one and struck out four, getting 14 of her 18 outs via ground balls. Freshman walk-on Vanessa Garcia (0-1) suffered the loss in her Division I debut, allowing five earned on 10 hits while walking two in five innings of work.
Brazil, Andrea Ortega, Moore, and Brenna Moss combined for eight of the Bulldogs' 10 hits on the day while the top four in the Fresno State order combined to go 6-for-12 with five RBI and four runs scored.
