LAS VEGAS, NV - Cal State Fullerton junior Tiffany Hoff's first home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the seventh lifted the Titans to a 1-0 upset of No. 6 California on Friday night in the first game of the 2006 Louisville Slugger Desert Classic hosted by UNLV.
Fullerton improved to 3-3 overall on the season while the Golden Bears suffered their first loss of the year in falling to 4-1.
Hoff sent the second pitch from Cal starter Kristina Thorson over the fence in left field for the lone run of the game after Thorson and Titans' starter Candice Baker (2-1) matched one another zero-for-zero through the first six innings.
Baker scattered five hits and struck out eight while walking one in the complete-game shutout victory. Thorson surrendered just four hits and struck out four in the loss.
Emily Friedman and Haley Woods combined for four of the five Golden Bears hits while Hoff had two hits on the day to lead the Titans.
California left seven runners on base, including base runners at third in both the fourth and fifth innings. Fullerton stranded five runners - all in the first four innings - including runners at second in the third and fourth innings.
Cal State Fullerton continues play on Friday night against Northwestern at approximately 6:20 pm.
