AUSTIN, TX - Freshman Torrie Anderson finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and freshman right-hander Christine Hiner allowed only three hits in five innings as No. 17 Cal State Fullerton shutout Penn State, 8-0, in five innings on a soggy Friday afternoon in Austin, Texas.
The game was delayed 68-minutes in the bottom of the fifth with the Titans ahead 3-0 and the bases loaded. After the weather cleared, Fullerton quickly ended the game thanks to a bases loaded walk by Jenna Wheeler, a bases-clearing double by Anderson, and an infield RBI single by Sammie Dabbs - her first career hit.
Hiner (3-0) earned her second shutout in as many starts, striking out four in the complete-game effort. Jackie Hill (0-1) suffered the loss for the Nittany Lions (0-2), allowing two runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Fullerton (4-2) jumped out ahead quickly in the third inning off starter Jackie Hill (0-0), getting a lead-off double by Anderson and a two-out hit by pitch to Courtney Martinez to put runners on the corners for Katie Gollhardt, who looped a double into left centerfield to score both and make it 2-0.
The Titans added another run in the fifth thanks to a fit of wildness by relief pitcher Jenn Reynolds as she walked the bases loaded for Lauren Lupinetti, whose ground ball to short was bobbled by the fielder, allowing Martinez to come home and make it 3-0.
That's when the rains began to fall, halting play with one out and the bases loaded for the Titans with sophomore Sheila Holguin at the plate.
With heavy rains expected in the Austin area on Saturday (Feb. 16), Cal State Fullerton is tentatively scheduled to meet \#24 Texas at 4 p.m. CST.
