TEMPE, AZ - Cal State Fullerton senior right-hander Ari Cervantes tossed a two-hit shutout and a pair of Titans finished with two hits on the day as they defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 3-0, to open the 2011 season at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State on Friday morning.
Cervantes (1-0) carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before pinch hitter Emily Bliss led off with a single up the middle and Karissa Veiga followed with a one-out single to put a pair on. After both moved into scoring position on a ground ball, Cervantes worked out of the jam by striking out Myshayla Fryer to end the inning and then retired the side in order in the seventh to end the game.
The senior finished with three strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
Fullerton scored in the first with two outs as Johnson reached on a single off pitcher Alyssa Walker (0-1), moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on junior Morgan LeMond's single back through the box for the 1-0 lead.
The Titans tacked on two more in the second as senior K.C. Craddick led-off with a double to right and, following a walk to freshman Lauren Mario, moved to third on a sacrifice by senior Sammie Dabbs. That brought up Cervantes, who lifted a high fly ball to centerfield, deep enough to plate Craddick and make it 2-0.
Mario, who had moved up 60 feet on the sac fly, then scored on a wild first pitch to Martinez in the next at bat for the 3-0 lead.
Walker (0-1) suffered the loss for Bakersfield, allowing two earned on four hits in two innings of work. Sarah Hoag pitched the final four innings for the Roadrunners, allowing two hits and striking out a pair in relief.
Cal State Fullerton closes out its first day in the desert later Friday afternoon as the Titans take on No. 21 Texas A&M at 2 p.m. MT in Tempe.
