Titans Rally Big to Earn First Win, 13-10
Feb. 10, 2012
AUSTIN - Eliza Crawford's two-run single was the big blow during a five-run seventh inning, helping rally Cal State Fullerton all the way back from an early eight-run deficit and claim a 13-10 win over Colorado State on the second day of the Texas Classic at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin on Friday afternoon.
The win was the first of the season for the Titans (1-1), who slugged out 14 hits against the Rams (1-1) after being held to just two hits the day before against the host Longhorns. Crawford finished 2-for-5 to join four teammates with multiple hits on the day.
Freshman Desiree Ybarra (1-0) earned the win in the circle, striking out eight in the complete-game effort, recovering from a bad second inning to allow just two runs on four hits over the next five innings to give her offense time to rally.
Kali Haas (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Colorado State, allowing five earned on four hits in 2 1/3 innings of work in relief of starter Kacie McCarthy.
Fullerton left runners on in the first two innings before the Rams opened the floodgates with eight runs in their half of the second. A bases-loaded RBI single by Shae Rodriguez got the scoring started, but the big blows came via a two-run double by Lyssa Roberts and a two-run home run by Cchelsea Biglow as Colorado State built an 8-0 lead.
The Titans clawed their way back in it with a big third inning as an RBI double by Nicole Johnson got things started before a pair of errors on balls hit by Morgan LeMond and Emily Vizcarra as well as an RBI single by Jena Rubio plated four more runs to make it an 8-5 ballgame.
A fielder's choice by Crawford in the fourth cut the deficit to two runs, but Colorado State got another bases-loaded RBI single by Rodriguez, plating two more runs to push its advantage to 10-6.
That's when Fullerton started chipping away, bringing home two runs on an RBI groundout by Ashley Carter and an error on Leesa Harris' ground ball to make it 10-8 and set up a furious seventh-inning rally. The Titans loaded the bases with one out before a passed ball brought home Adriana Martinez to make it a one-run game and, after Johnson was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Crawford laced a full count offering from Kailey Snyder into left field, scoring a pair for the 11-10 lead.
A double steal then put both Johnson and Crawford into scoring position for Anissa Young, who singled to right field on the first pitch she saw, scoring both runners to give the Titans some breathing room.
Ybarra then shut the door in the seventh, allowing a one out walk before getting a ground ball and a strikeout looking to end the game.
Carter set the table for the Titans, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI while Harris, Crawford, Vizcarra, and Rubio each finished with two hits apiece. For Vizcarra and Rubio, the hits were the first of their careers while eight of the nine Fullerton starters finished with at least one hit.
Roberts finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI to lead the Rams.
Cal State Fullerton closes out round-robin play at the Texas Classic on Saturday morning (Feb. 11) at 8 a.m. PT against Texas-San Antonio. Following Colorado State-Texas, a championship bracket will be seeded with semifinal games held later in the day at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. PT.
