FULLERTON, CA -
The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team dominated the 2005 All-Big West Conference postseason awards as the Titans placed seven on the all-conference First Team and earned numerous individual honors as selected by the coaches and released by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
Individually, fifth-year Head Coach Ali Khosroshahin earned his second Big West Coach of the Year honor, sharing the award with UC Riverside's Veronica O'Brien. Khosroshahin was also honored back in his rookie coaching season of 2001 when he led the Titans to the Big West title and the school's first-ever NCAA women's soccer tournament berth.
Seniors Kellie Cox (six goals, two assists) and Kandace Wilson (seven goals, four assists) were named the Co-Big West Offensive Players of the Year, ranking second and third on the team in scoring, respectively.
Senior Marlene Sandoval, who helped the Titan defense rank first in nearly every major defensive category in the Big West this season, was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Karen Bardsley shined in net this season and came home with Big West Goalkeeper of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. Bardsley allowed a league low 10 goals and ranks first in goals against average (0.58) and second in shutouts (9).
Cox, Wilson, Sandoval, and Bardsley were all named to the All-Big West First Team and were joined by teammates Lauryn Welch, Lisa Kosena, and Erica Janke - all of whom were making their inaugural First Team appearance.
For Cox and Wilson, the 2005 season marked the third time in their careers that the duo has been listed on the All-Big West First Team while Sandoval and Bardsley made it for the second time in their careers.
Seniors Rebekah Patrick, Erica Pryor, and Erin Shelton were named to the second team, while senior defender Ashley O'Brien was named to the Honorable Mention squad.
Regular season and Big West Tournament champion Cal State Fullerton returns to the pitch this weekend, hosting UNLV, Southern California, and Gonzaga in NCAA Tournament action this weekend at Titan Stadium.
The Women of Troy face the Bulldogs in the opening match on Friday night (Nov. 11) at 5 p.m., before the Titans take on the Rebels in the nightcap, 30 minutes following the completion of the first match.
