Titans' Sandoval Named to National Team of the Week
Sept. 7, 2005
FULLERTON, CA -
Cal State Fullerton senior defender Marlene Sandoval added to her weekly award haul on Wednesday as she was named to both the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz National Teams of the Week.
Sandoval, who was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday (Sept. 5), earned her first weekly honor from Soccer America and became only the fourth Titan so honored by the publication since 2001 joining Kandace Wilson (2004), Nicole Mularkey (2002), and Michele Bannister (2001).
She is the sixth Titan since 2001 to be so honored by Soccer Buzz.
Sandoval was instrumental in helping Cal State Fullerton to the Auburn/Reebok Classic title, steadying the defense in a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the host Tigers in the opener and scoring the lone goal of the match off a penalty kick in a 1-0 victory over South Carolina.
The Titans return to action this weekend as one of four teams at the Santa Clara adidas Classic in Northern California. Fullerton will meet Gonzaga on Friday afternoon (Sept. 9) at 4:30 p.m. before taking on the host Broncos on Sunday (Sept. 11) at 1:30 p.m. Defending national champion Notre Dame rounds out the four team field.
