Challenging Spring Ahead for Women's Soccer

Feb. 22, 2012

FULLERTON, CA - Looking to build off the momentum of its 2011 regular season, the Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team has put together a challenging slate of 10 matches, including a trip to take on defending NCAA Champion Stanford in Northern California.

"We have set out on a mission to truly challenge ourselves as a program," Head Coach Demian Brown said. "Beginning with the spring schedule, we wanted to play teams within our conference and regionally that have strong RPI's and there is no greater measuring stick for our growth than to play the defending National Champion, West Coast Conference Champion, and our own Big West Conference champions.

"I feel that our team has matured an incredible amount over the last two years. Now with such a strong and dedicated senior group I feel we are ready for these type of challenges."

The Titans open the spring on the road on Feb. 25, travelling south to take on San Diego and future Big West Conference member San Diego State in back-to-back contests. Fullerton then returns home to host Big West rivals UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and Cal State Northridge in a pseudo "Big West Tournament" at Titan Stadium on March 10 in an all-day event.

"Our strength of schedule for the fall is, probably, one of the toughest we have ever had," said junior defender JeAnne Mazeau. "The preseason is going to be challenging, but it will prepare us for our run through the Big West Conference."

A clash with Pepperdine at UC San Diego follows on March 31 before the Titans return home to host Southern California rival UCLA and Cal State San Marcos on April 7 in a doubleheader at Titan Stadium.

All that leads up to a trip to Northern California for matches against 2011 NCAA National Champion Stanford and San Jose State on April 14. The spring schedule culminates in the second-annual Alumnae Festival at Titan Stadium on April 21.

"All of this is meant to better prepare us for what is most likely our most challenging fall schedule in recent history," Brown said. "We not only want to compete and play well in those games, we are setting out to win those challenges. The ultimate goal, however, still remains, as we hope to put ourselves in a position to challenge for and win the 2012 Big West Conference and represent our university at the NCAA Championships."

"I am very excited to compete with top-ranked teams this spring," junior forward Stacey Fox said. "It will be challenging, but I have great confidence that our team is just as good, if not better, than the teams we will be playing against."
