Titans Hold Off Tigers, 2-1, to Remain Unbeaten in Big West Play
Oct. 6, 2006
FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton junior Brianna Buffington and senior Erica Janke each scored first half goals to help lift the visiting Titans to a 2-1 victory over host Pacific on Friday night in a Big West Conference women's soccer match in Stockton, Calif.
The victory pushed the Titans back over the .500 mark at 6-5-1 overall and moved Fullerton to 2-0 in Big West play. The Tigers fell to 8-3-1 overall and 0-2 in league action.
The Titans, who were outshot by a 15-7 margin for the match, made good on their only two shots on net in the contest.
Janke got Fullerton on the board first just seven minutes in as the junior netted her first goal of the season off a Candice Byler corner kick at the 6:29 mark to make it 1-0.
Buffington extended the Titans' lead just under four minutes later with her fourth goal of the season, and her second in as many matches, as she fired from the top of the box low to the far post to make it 2-0.
Pacific would not go away, however, as Carmen Padilla scored for the second time this season, taking a ball from teammate Alisha Bledsoe in the box and beating Fullerton goalkeeper Karen Bardsley and close the gap to 2-1.
The Tigers controlled the second half, outshooting the Titans by a 12-3 margin. However, Fullerton's defense came up big, including stuffing Pacific's best chance to tie the score with just over 10 minutes to play.
Padilla and Bunny Dickson each had clean looks at the net for the Tigers, however, Padilla's shot was turned away at the goal line, saved by a Titans' defender while Dickson's shot off the rebound was knocked away by Bardsley, who made four saves on the night, on a diving cross body save.
The victory was the 10th in 15 games for the Titans over the Tigers and the seventh in a row in the series.
Cal State Fullerton returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 8) at 2:30 p.m. with a match at Cal State Northridge.
