SEATTLE, WA - Cal State Fullerton senior Stacey Thompson scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the 76th minute, to help lift the Titans to their first victory of the 2007 season, a 3-1 triumph over Washington on Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Husky Nike Invitational.
Fullerton improved to 1-2-1 overall on the year, giving first-year head coach Demian Brown his first career win. The Huskies fell to 0-4 overall, having been swept for the first time in the 13-year history of their own tournament after a 3-1 loss to Purdue on Friday night.
Thompson got the Titans on the board first in the 39th minute by converting a penalty kick to give Fullerton the 1-0 lead that lasted through halftime.
In the second half, Washington got an equalizing penalty kick of its own in the 67th minute as Dani Bridges netted the Huskies only tally after teammate Melissa Beal was taken down in the box.
Washington continued to pressure Fullerton freshman goalkeeper Shannon Simpson, who was making her first career start in net, taking three quick shots in a three-minute span, including an attempt by Robin Alexander that glanced off the post in the 74th minute.
Just under two minutes later, Thompson put away the go-ahead score in the 76th minute, collecting a rebound off a Lauren Cram blocked shot, sending it home from 15 yards for the 2-1 advantage.
Senior Brianna Buffington added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, stealing a pass and dribbling through the box before sending a rocket from 12 yards away for the final 3-1 decision.
Simpson made two saves in net for the Titans, who matched the Huskies' 16-shot output on the afternoon.
Cal State Fullerton returns to Titan Stadium to play in front of the hometown faithful for the first time this regular season on Friday afternoon (Sept. 14) at 2 p.m. against No. 16 California to open a three-match homestand.
