FULLERTON, CA - Utah's Chelsea Forbes netted the eventual game-winner in the 57th minute and Lauren Hair added a pair of assists to help lift the visiting Utes to a 3-1 victory over host Cal State Fullerton in a non-conference women's soccer match-up on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium.
Cal State Fullerton fell to 0-1 overall in its season opener while Utah improved to 2-0 overall on the season.
The Utes struck first after an uneventful first 20 minutes as leading scorer Kelly Isleib took advantage of a miscue to put her side ahead in the 21st minute. Hair sent a ball into the box from the left side near the endline, missing a teammate in the middle of the field, but a misclear by the defense delivered the ball to Isleib's feet.
The senior then settled the ball and had time to place her shot to the left post, giving Utah the 1-0 lead.
The match remained that way into the second half until Forbes put her foot on the game-winner in the 57th minute. A nifty sequence at the top of the box led to the goal as back passes from Hair and Kellie Woodfield found Forbes at the top of the box, who stuck a shot to the right post for the 2-0 advantage.
Utah made it a 3-0 contest eight minutes later when Hair led a breakway in the Titans' third, slotting a pass to a wide-open Hanna Terry before falling to the ground. Terry then went 1-on-1 with the Fullerton keeper and netting her first goal of the year.
Fullerton broke-up the shutout in the 67th minute as freshman Brisa Gonzalez was taken down at the top of the box trying to turn and unleash a shot. The referee awarded a penalty kick which was converted by junior Tamara Dewey for the final 3-1 tally.
Utah held an 8-6 advantage in shots while the Titans committed 14 fouls to seven for the Utes.
Cal State Fullerton continues its three-match homestand next weekend as the Titans host St. John's on Friday (Aug. 28) at 6 p.m. before welcoming the Mexican Women's National Team in for an exhibition on Sunday (Aug. 30) afternoon at 1 p.m.
